From the early 1970s onwards, funk gave rise to several subgenres, such as psychedelic funk, funk rock, jazz-funk, avant-funk, go-go, boogie, electro-funk, funk metal, G-funk, Timba funk, funk jam and samba-funk. Each subgenre incorporates distinct elements, such as the use of synthesizers in psychedelic funk, the fusion of funk and rock in funk rock, and the influence of jazz in jazz-funk. Notable artists include George Clinton, Prince, and bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Living Color.
